Springfield Nondiscrimination Ordinance

In 2012 advocates hoped the Springfield City Council would pass a nondiscrimination ordinance to provide housing and employment protections for LGBTQ residents, who can currently be fired or denied housing due to their identity. Although many city council members supported the nondiscrimination ordinance, conservative groups threatened to recall any members who voted in favor of it. A Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity (SOGI) Task Force was created to research discrimination in the city and make recommendations to the mayor and city council.

Several PFLAG members turned out for an opportunity to speak in favor of the ordinance. The Reverend Dr. Phil Snyder’s unorthodox speech in favor of the ordinance went viral online shortly thereafter:
